More Praise for the Lesser Arts

In a previous blog, I expressed my enthusiasm for Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Magic Realism, Surrealism and the like. Last night I watched an old episode of a Sci-Fi series called STARGATE, which gives me an opportunity to demonstrate the metaphorical nature of these things.

The principle BADDIES in Stargate are a species of worm, called go'auld, that exist as parasites in the bodies of other host species, usually human. Naturally, the host is killed when the worm takes over its body.

I have talked in several of my other blogs (mostly in joan-well.blogspot.com) about the 'negative chattering voices' that intrude into us all, starting from birth (can you see where this is going yet?) Basically, our culture, science and (mostly) christianity, has created a sort of 'cutural stereotype' of a law abiding, morally upstanding sensitive(?) human being that we are all supposed to be or aspire to be. Conditioning/training starts from birth: the natural human being is starved, and the cultural stereotype is fattened up with flattery and rewards.

This cultural stereotype is AN ALIEN. It is not human. In fact, as I have talked of in other blogs, it is more akin to a computer than a real mind (the work of science here!). Thus, at birth, the embryo go'auld is implanted into the baby, and while the mind of the human infant is starved, the go'auld is fed and grows until, sometime I guess in adolescence, the go'auld takes over completely, and the last remnants of the natural human die.

So, how does that compare with your wonderful, insightful (!!??), literary masterpieces, Dickens, Tolstoy or Shakespeare? What you get from interpreting the metaphors of Sci-Fi and its kindred, are THE TRUTHS THAT LIE TOO DEEP FOR TAINT.

PS I love Dickens, Tolstoy (WAR AND PEACE is DEFINITELY better than GONE WITH THE WIND in my opinion), and Shakespeare .... I just don't look to them for any deep insights, much less TRUTH, about human, or any other, nature.
